Fortunately, new rules in Ontario are making it easier to get the care you need. Pharmacists in the province can now prescribe medications for common conditions like a urinary tract infection (UTI)—an illness that affects one out of every two women in Canada.
UTIs are usually caused by bacteria attacking the kidneys, ureters, bladder, or urethra. They’re often treated with an antibiotic, something that before 2023 only a doctor could prescribe. In fact, research shows that Canadian women make about 500,000 visits to doctors each year due to UTIs.
Now, if you’re prone to this pesky condition, you can simply swing by your nearest Rexall or local pharmacy. Instead of having to fit another appointment into your busy schedule, you’ll be able to speak with a trained pharmacist on the spot. There’s no need to make an appointment, and the consultation is covered by OHIP so there are no out-of-pocket costs.
The pharmacist will ask you some questions to assess your condition and decide on the best plan of action. They may recommend an over-the-counter treatment, write you a prescription or refer you to a doctor if they feel the condition is serious or requires a follow up. If they prescribe medication, you can get it filled on the spot.
